Day 2: Style

7 Days, Day 2: Skate Mama Style

Day 2 of 7 Days had a theme: Style. This brought up a lot of questions in my head, and I’ve been thinking about it off and on for a few days. What exactly is style? Does everybody posses It? Is there a difference between Style (with a capital ‘S’) and “a style”? Why and how do things go in and out of style? What do you think?
I don’t know that I’m very stylish, but I’d say that I have “a style”. Most of the time it’s just simple, well fitting clothes that are comfy and I probably bought at a bargain price. I’m pretty practical when it comes to things like that. I do tend to be a bit on the sporty side I guess. And I’m talking beach girl, skater-betty, snowboard chick style, and that’s where my hot pink skull Vans come out of. You may not agree with me, but sometimes style and comfort do come together.
As an aside, my feminine style is something I’ve been consciously working on lately. Just as an attempt to feel good about what I’m wearing, a tangible way to lift my spirits and gain a little confidence. (Also, my hubby kinda likes it when I look hawt!) I actually bought a pair of peep-toe stilettos last week to wear with my skinny jeans! Ack. I like ‘em, but I’m baffled as to who can actually walk in and wear those things all day!

Secrets and Somewhat Shameful Things…

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

So yesterday I finally did it. Gasp if you must, roll your eyes if you will, turn your nose up, but I had good reason. Yes, yesterday I bought myself a pair of (faux) crocs. I’d been contemplating this purchase for a while. I must admit, I’ve always liked “granola” type things, and comfortable things, and crocs are no exception. Yes, I think the vast majority of them are ugly too, but I’m not the type of person who will suffer to wear heels around all day, just because they are cute. No, my vanity takes different forms. (Like, only using brushes to put on my eye makeup.) I rationalized this purchase by convincing myself that I needed them. They sure would come in handy for dripping wet trips to the pool (they would save my leather sandals from sure chlorine water death), and they would also be a great tool for pottery since they are easy to wash off. (Mud goes flying everywhere, last night it was all over my face!) So that’s all well and good, you think, why not just buy a pair of $2.50 flip-flops at Old N@vy? TRACTION. That’s why. Have you ever tried to walk in a pair of wet flip-flops? Yeah, life threatening, isn’t it? I also must add, there is the added benefit of toe coverage here as well, and in the winter I can wear socks with them to my pottery studio. You can’t do THAT with flip- flops! Well, you can, but it looks RIDICULOUS! If it makes up for any respect I’ve now certainly lost, I bought what I thought were the cutest of all the evils… lavender mary-janes. And that’s my somewhat shameful story- (if it helps, I bought them at P@yless, and got another pair of water sandals for Selah for 1/2 off.)

…and now for my secret… Wednesday nights I head off to the pottery studio (I decided to say “pottery studio” instead of “pottery” or “pottery class” because I’m really leading myself here. I do have the added benefit of a professional there, from whom I can ask any question…but none-the-less…) Well, recently I’ve been stopping to treat myself to certain coffee delights, before I head off to class. Like the the Mint Mocha Chip Frappucino from St@rbucks, or a Mocha Moolatte from D@iry Queen. It’s kind of like taking myself on a mini date for a treat. I think I deserve it. I work hard. And now you know.
Tee hee.

I Have Big Feet!

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

So I got some new skate shoes yesterday after lots and lots of research, and then tons more of scouring my (disappointing) local stores. I have to say the drawback of shopping (for shoes anyway) on the internet is that you have all these options, but the sizes are often not available, and even if they do have your size, you still don’t know if it fits until the shoe gets to your house. Or you can find the perfect shoe,(the grey one) and then it randomly becomes unavailable and you can’t find another site that is selling it (that’s what happened to me!) So anyways…I got new shoes, and they’re not exactly what I wanted, but they’re good enough, and I was thinking of ways to customize them, and kind of make them my own and I figured I’d get some purple shoe laces for them. So back to the internet I go, seeing that finding shoelaces isn’t nearly as complicated as buying shoes. (Right?) And I stumbled across this site. Who knew lacing your shoes could be such an art?
Oh yeah, and the reason for the title…I’m wearing a size 10 in my new shoes. A 10! Size 10! Anyways, that’s not so bad, but I really appreciate when I find a shoe that can make my feet look smaller- uh, not that these do. But at least I’m not going to have smooshed toes. The nice thing about seeing an actual human to buy shoes? He/she will tell you why it’s a good thing to have a thumbs width between your toes and the toe of the shoe. Seriously…I think I have several pairs of shoes that are too small for me and I’ve just been putting up with them for a long time. Oh well…
